This is an old book from China.

The Book of Documents is very old.

The Book of Documents is a famous set of old writings.

The book has many different versions. Some versions are called "Modern Texts." These used a common way of writing. Other versions are called "Old Texts." These used a much older style of writing. One scholar named Fu Sheng saved some parts of the book. Later, a man named Kong Anguo found more parts. He said they were hidden in a wall.
The book is split into four main parts. They cover different times in history. One part is about a leader named Yu the Great. Other parts cover the Xia, Shang, and Zhou groups. The Zhou part is the largest. It makes up more than half of the book. Some of these words are very old. They show how people spoke in the past.
The Book of Documents is a famous collection of ancient Chinese writings.

The book works by recording formal speeches made by kings and important figures. These speeches usually fall into five main types. Some are consultations between a king and his ministers. Others are instructions given to a king by his helpers. Some are announcements made by a king to all his people. There are also declarations made during battles and commands given to specific leaders. Many of these speeches begin with a phrase that means "the king seemingly said." This suggests the words were written as scripts for officials to read aloud.
The history of these texts is very complex and full of mystery. A tradition says the famous thinker Confucius compiled the book himself. He chose these documents from a much larger group of writings. During the Qin dynasty, many copies of these books were destroyed. However, a scholar named Fu Sheng saved some parts of the work. He preserved 29 chapters that became known as the "Modern Texts." These used the common script of the early Han dynasty.
Later, a different version appeared called the "Old Texts." A man named Kong Anguo said he found these in a wall at Confucius's home. These texts used a much older style of writing from before the Qin era. The Old Texts had 16 more chapters than the Modern version. In the 4th century AD, a man named Mei Ze presented a 58-chapter version to the court. This version was widely accepted for a long time. However, scholars like Yan Ruoqu later argued these Old Texts might have been made up.
Today, we can learn more about the book through new discoveries. Between 1993 and 2008, researchers found bamboo slips in old tombs. These slips come from the state of Chu and date to around 300 BC. They provide new pieces of information that were not in the usual books. The book is traditionally split into four eras of history. These include the time of Yu the Great and the Xia, Shang, and Zhou dynasties. The Zhou section is the largest part of the entire work.
The Book of Documents, also called the Classic of History, is a vital collection of ancient Chinese prose.
The book functions as a record of formal political communication. Most chapters are structured as speeches made by kings or high-ranking officials. These speeches generally fall into five distinct categories. Consultations involve discussions between a king and his ministers. Instructions are pieces of advice given to a king by his ministers. Announcements are messages sent by a king to his people. Declarations occur when a ruler speaks during a battle. Finally, commands are specific orders given by a king to a vassal.
The chapters are traditionally grouped into four historical sections. These sections represent different eras of ancient Chinese history. The first section covers the legendary reign of Yu the Great. The second section focuses on the Xia dynasty. The third section covers the Shang dynasty. The fourth and largest section covers the Zhou dynasty. The Zhou section accounts for more than half of the entire text. Some chapters from the early Zhou period date back to the late 11th century BC. While other sections claim to be older, many scholars believe those chapters were composed later.
The history of these texts is marked by significant loss and recovery. During the Qin dynasty, many copies were destroyed in the Burning of Books. A scholar named Fu Sheng saved 29 chapters from this destruction. These became known as the "Modern Texts" because they used the clerical script of the Western Han dynasty. Later, a longer version was reportedly discovered in the wall of Confucius's family estate. This version was found by Kong Anguo in the late 2nd century BC. These were called "Old Texts" because they used a much older script. The Old Texts contained 16 more chapters than the Modern Texts.
Different versions of the book led to long literary controversies. In 317 AD, Mei Ze presented a 58-chapter version to the Eastern Jin court. This version combined the Modern and Old texts and was widely accepted. It eventually became part of a canonized project by Kong Yingda. However, scholars began to doubt the authenticity of the Old Texts. In the 17th century, the scholar Yan Ruoqu proposed they were fabrications. He suggested they were reconstructed in the 3rd or 4th centuries AD. Other scholars, like Mei Zhuo, argued they were forged using other historical records.
Modern archaeology has provided new evidence regarding the text's origins. Between 1993 and 2008, researchers found bamboo slips in tombs from the state of Chu. These slips date to around 300 BC, which is before the Qin book burning. The Guodian Chu Slips and the Shanghai Museum corpus contain previously unknown passages. The Tsinghua Bamboo Slips include a version of a text called "Golden Coffer." These finds help scholars compare the transmitted versions with even older written fragments. This research continues to clarify the complex history of the documents.
The Book of Documents connects deeply to the study of Chinese history and linguistics. It is one of the Five Classics of ancient Chinese literature. The text has influenced how political principles are understood and taught. The study of its different scripts provides insight into the evolution of Chinese writing. By examining the various editions, historians can trace the development of political thought. The controversy over its authenticity also shows how scholars use evidence to verify historical records. The book remains a central subject for understanding ancient Chinese civilization.
