Have you ever thought about how we know what happened long ago? Most people study history to learn about the past. However, there is a special way to study how those stories were written. This is called historiography. It is not just about the events themselves. Instead, it is the study of the methods historians use. It looks at how they pick their sources and research tools.

Scholars use it to see how different people interpret the same old stories. This helps us understand how our view of the past can change over time.

Writing history in a story format began a long time ago. In ancient Greece, a man named Herodotus wrote a famous work called The Histories. He lived around the 5th century BC. He is often called the "father of history" because he traveled to find facts.

Another writer named Thucydides followed him. Thucydides tried to find the real causes of wars. He did not use myths or gods to explain why things happened. He wanted to use a more rational way of thinking. This set a new standard for how people wrote about the world.

Other great civilizations also developed their own ways of recording the past. In China, during the Han Empire, a father and son changed everything. Sima Tan and Sima Qian wrote a book called the Shiji.

This book is known as the Records of the Grand Historian. In Rome, a leader named Cato the Elder wrote the Origines. This was the first major history written in the Latin language. These writers helped make sure their cultures would not be forgotten.

As time passed, the way people studied history became more official. During the 18th-century Age of Enlightenment, thinkers like Voltaire and Edward Gibbon helped shape the field.

By the 19th century, history became a professional job at universities. Many people believed that studying history was like doing science.

In the 20th century, historians began to look at new things. They moved away from just studying kings and wars. They started to look at the economy and how regular people lived. This made the study of the past much broader.

Today, historiography helps us see how our own loyalties might change a story. For example, a person's nation might influence how they write about a war. In American universities, the focus has shifted many times. Between 1975 and 1995, more professors studied social history.

The number of social history professors rose from 31 percent to 41 percent. At the same time, political historians dropped from 40 percent to 30 percent. This shows that the way we look at the past is always growing. We are always finding new ways to understand our world.

Historiography is the academic study of how history is written. It is not the study of past events themselves. Instead, it is the study of the methods historians use to develop history as a discipline. This includes looking at their research techniques and their theoretical approaches. Scholars also examine how historians interpret various documentary sources. When people study a specific topic, they are engaging in historiography. This might include the historiography of the United Kingdom or World War II. It can also involve studying specific genres, like political history or social history.

To understand historiography, one must look at the changing interpretations of events. In the early modern period, the term simply meant "the writing of history." During that time, a person who wrote history was called a historiographer. Some nations even had official roles for this. For example, Sweden and England had the title "Historiographer Royal." Scotland still maintains a similar post today. Modern historiography focuses on the "history of historical writing." This means looking at how individual historians change our view of the past. It examines how their specific perspectives shape the stories they tell.

Writing history in a narrative format began in Classical Antiquity. While ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia used chronicles, they lacked detailed analysis. Systematic historical thought emerged in 5th century BC Greece. Herodotus of Halicarnassus is known as the "father of history." He wrote *The Histories* and traveled extensively to conduct research. He tried to distinguish between reliable and unreliable accounts. However, he still believed that divinity played a role in historical events.

Later, Thucydides changed the field by removing divine causes. He focused on rational explanations for the war between Athens and Sparta. He was the first to distinguish between the immediate origins of an event and its actual causes.

Other great civilizations developed their own unique traditions. In the Han Empire of Ancient China, Sima Tan and Sima Qian established Chinese historiography. They wrote the *Shiji*, or *Records of the Grand Historian*.

In Rome, the statesman Cato the Elder produced the *Origines* in the 2nd century BC. This was the first major work of Roman historiography written in Latin.

Roman writers like Livy recorded the rise of the empire. Others, like Plutarch and Suetonius, introduced biography as a branch of history. They focused on the human side and character of ancient personalities.

During the Middle Ages, historical writing took many different forms. In Europe, historians wrote various chronicles. The Ethiopian Empire also produced historical works. In the Islamic world, Muslim historians created detailed histories. In Asia, Korean and Japanese writers used the Chinese model for their own historical writings.

The Age of Enlightenment in the 18th century further shaped the discipline. Figures like Voltaire, David Hume, and Edward Gibbon helped set the foundations for modern historiography.

These thinkers moved the field toward more structured and critical methods.

In the 19th century, history became a professional academic discipline. It was studied at universities and research centers. During this time, many believed that history should be treated like a science.

The 20th century brought even more change to the field. Historians began to include social science dimensions like economy and culture. There was a major shift away from traditional diplomatic and political history. Instead, researchers moved toward social and cultural studies. This change is clearly visible in university data from the United States.

Specific numbers show how much research interests have shifted over time. From 1975 to 1995, the proportion of American history professors identifying with social history rose from 31 percent to 41 percent. During that same period, political historians decreased from 40 percent to 30 percent. Diplomatic history dropped from 5 percent to 3 percent. Economic history fell from 7 percent to 5 percent. Meanwhile, cultural history grew from 14 percent to 16 percent. In 2007, British universities showed similar trends. Of 5,723 faculty members, 29 percent identified with social history, while 25 percent identified with political history.

This data proves that the focus of historiography is constantly evolving.
