Ban Chao was different. He did not want to be a writer. He wanted to be a soldier. He once said that a brave man should do great things in far lands.

Ban Chao traveled to the Western Regions. These were lands in Central Asia. He led soldiers for over 30 years. He fought against a group called the Xiongnu. He also worked with the Kushan Empire. Ban Chao was very skillful. He often led small groups against much larger forces. He helped make trade routes safe. This helped many kingdoms work together.

In 91 CE, the government gave him a big job. He became the Protector General. He stayed in a place called Qiuci. He sent an envoy named Gan Ying to the west. This was the first Chinese account of Europe. Ban Chao retired when he was 70 years old.
