His writing is part of the Jian'an style. This style is known for being deep and moving. His early poems were full of hope and big dreams. Later in life, his poems became more sad. This was because he had a hard time in politics. He fought with his brother, Cao Pi, for power. Because of this, Cao Zhi was not allowed to lead.

One famous story tells of his skill. His brother once asked him to write a poem. He had to do this in only seven steps. Cao Zhi wrote a poem about beans cooking. The poem asked why the beans were hurting each other. They came from the same root. This story shows how much people value his talent. Today, more than 90 of his poems still exist.
