He lived a long time ago. He studied math, stars, and how things work. His family also studied the sky.

Zu was famous for finding a special number. This number is called pi. Pi helps us understand circles. Zu found a very exact value for pi. He used wooden sticks to do his math. His number was the best in the world for nearly 900 years. He found this by using a shape with 24,576 sides!

Zu also helped people track time. He made the Daming calendar. This calendar was very accurate. He even figured out how to find the volume of a sphere, which is a ball shape. He worked on this with his son.

Zu was also a clever inventor. He made paddle boats. These boats had wheels to move in water. He also fixed a machine called a south-pointing chariot. This machine used gears to point south. It did not use magnets like a compass. He used bronze to make the parts work well.
