Liu Hui was a famous mathematician from ancient China.

He lived during the Three Kingdoms period. This was a time from 220 to 280 CE. He was a descendant of the Marquis of Zixiang. In 263 CE, he wrote a very important commentary. This was about a book called The Nine Chapters on the Mathematical Art. His work helped people understand how math works in the real world. He wanted to explain why certain math methods work. He also wanted to show why some methods do not work.

He was very good at studying shapes and space.

Liu Hui studied things like cones and cylinders. He also looked at pyramids and prisms. He found ways to break large shapes into smaller pieces. For example, he could split a wedge into a pyramid and other parts. He even found a way to calculate the volume of a cylinder. He tried to find the volume of a sphere too. However, he could not finish that hard job. He left it for a mathematician in the future to solve.

Liu Hui also worked with circles and special numbers. Most people back then thought the number pi was just 3.

Liu Hui knew it was more exact than that. He used a shape with many sides inside a circle. This is called an inscribed polygon. He first used a shape with 192 sides. This gave him a value of 157 divided by 50. Later, he used a shape with 3072 sides. This gave a much better answer of 3.14159. This was more accurate than the work of Archimedes or Ptolemy.

He used math to measure the world around him.

He wrote a manual called The Sea Island Mathematical Manual. This book was about surveying, which means measuring land. He taught people how to use tall poles and horizontal bars. These tools helped measure the height of a tree on a hill. They could also measure the width of a river. He showed how to find the height of a pagoda tower. He even helped people plan how to build canals and river dykes.

Liu Hui's ideas were very helpful for many people. His math helped workers know how much labor they needed. It also helped them know how much time a job would take. He may have been the first to use negative numbers. This was long before mathematicians in India did the same thing. His work was so important that it was translated into French. A professor named Guo Shuchun worked on this for twenty years. This shows how much the world values his great discoveries.
