Jia Xian was a brilliant mathematician from China.

He lived during the Song dynasty a long time ago. He worked in a city called Kaifeng. In the palace, he served as a member of the Left Duty Group. Jia Xian studied math with a teacher named Chu Yan. He became very skilled at solving math puzzles. He wrote many different books about his work. These books helped spread new ways to think about numbers.

One of his most famous ideas was a special triangle.

People in the West often call this Pascal's triangle. However, Jia Xian described it much earlier. He found it around the middle of the 11th century. This was about six hundred years before Pascal lived. He did not just study the triangle for fun. He used it as a helpful tool for math. It helped him find square roots and cubic roots.

To find these roots, he used a special way of working.

This was called the additive-multiplicative method. This method used adding and multiplying to reach an answer. It is a way that follows the Horner rule. This rule helps people solve hard math problems step by step. It makes finding roots much easier than other ways. This method was a very clever way to use numbers.

We do not have his original book today.

His book was titled Shi Suo Suan Shu. We know about his work because of other people. A mathematician named Yang Hui wrote about these methods later. Yang Hui said his work was based on Jia Xian. He used the ideas from the Shi Suo Suan Shu. These important facts are even kept in the Yongle Encyclopedia. This shows how much people valued his math ideas.

Math is all about finding patterns in the world. Jia Xian found a pattern in a triangle of numbers. This pattern helps us understand how numbers grow and change. It links simple adding to much harder math tasks. By using the triangle, he made big problems smaller. His work shows how one smart idea can last for centuries. Even without his book, his math lives on today.
