Hasan started a new group called the Nizari Isma'ili state. He led this group from a huge mountain fort. The fort was called Alamut Castle. It sits high in the Alborz mountains. The castle was built a long time ago in the year 865. Legend says a king built it after seeing an eagle. The eagle perched on a rock as a sign. This is why the fort's name means "Eagles' Teaching." Hasan took over the castle in the year 1090. He did this by winning over the people in the valley first.

Hasan's life was full of travel and study. He was born in the city of Qom in the 1050s. As a young man, he moved to the city of Rayy. He studied many languages and math there. When he was seventeen, he joined the Isma'ili movement. He traveled for two years to reach Cairo in Egypt. He arrived in Cairo on August 30, 1078. During his travels, he went to places like Iraq and Syria. He even visited Armenia and Azerbaijan.

Many people remember Hasan by a special name. The traveler Marco Polo called him the "Old Man of the Mountain." This name came from his mountain home. Hasan's group had many followers called fida'i. These were people who were very devoted to their cause. Hasan's followers had great libraries at the castle. They kept books on science and religion there. He also made a big change for his group. He decided they should use the Persian language for their holy books. This helped their ideas spread through many lands.

Hasan's story is still told in many ways today. Some people wrote books about his life and his rise to power. A famous novel called *Alamut* was written about him in 1938. Even a music group called Hawkwind wrote a song about him. He was a very important leader to his followers. They called him "Our Master" to show respect. He lived in his castle for about 35 years. He spent most of that time reading, writing, and praying.
