Hasan al-Basri was a very famous Muslim preacher and scholar. He lived during the early days of the Umayyad Caliphate. People remember him for his deep religious knowledge. He was also known for a way of life called asceticism. This means he chose to live very simply. He taught that people should not care too much about money or worldly things.

Instead, he believed in focusing on the love and knowledge of God. His powerful sermons made a huge impression on the people of his time.

His life began in the city of Medina in 642 CE. His mother, Khayra, was a maidservant for Umm Salama. His father, Peroz, was a Persian man from southern Iraq.

Hasan grew up in Medina for most of his early years. He studied with many important people from the early Muslim community. One of these teachers was the fourth caliph, Imam Ali. Hasan was even said to have met the Prophet Muhammad as a baby. Some stories say he even drank from Muhammad's water jug.

As a young man, Hasan had a very different life. He worked as a jewel merchant selling fine stones. He also took part in military campaigns in eastern Iran around 663 CE.

However, a striking scene changed his mind about wealth. He heard a story about a Byzantine Emperor mourning a dead son. The Emperor realized that wealth and power could not save a life. This made Hasan decide to leave his business behind. He chose to become a scholar and a teacher instead.

During his time in Basra, Hasan became a very respected leader. He was part of a group called the tabi'un. These were the followers who knew the companions of Muhammad.

He was an expert in exegesis, which is explaining the Quran. He also studied theology, the study of God. Many people thought he was one of the abdal. These were believed to be forty special saints who help the world. He spoke out against leaders who were not fair. This was sometimes dangerous for his safety.

People described Hasan in many interesting ways. Some said he was very handsome and even had blue eyes. He was also known for being a frequent weeper. He cried many tears while praying because he felt sorry for his sins.

He died in Basra in 728 CE at the age of eighty-six. Many later thinkers, like Abu Talib al-Makki, called him an important guide. Even today, his name is found in many spiritual traditions. He remains a symbol of living a simple and holy life.
