He was born in Jedburgh to Margaret Key and James Brewster. His father was a teacher at a local grammar school. David was the third of six children in his family. At age 12, he started studying at the University of Edinburgh. He originally planned to become a minister in the church. However, he soon found himself very interested in the natural sciences.

Brewster is best known for his work in physical optics. This is the study of how light behaves. He studied how light can be polarized, or organized in a certain way. He discovered a special way light reflects at a specific angle. This is called Brewster's angle. He also studied how crystals change light when they are squeezed. This work helped create a new field called optical mineralogy. He even found how heat and pressure can change a crystal's structure.

Brewster was a very busy inventor with many clever ideas. In 1817, he patented the kaleidoscope. This toy uses mirrors to create beautiful, colorful patterns. It became a massive success in London and Paris. He also improved how people see in 3D. In 1849, he invented the lenticular stereoscope. This was the first portable device for 3D viewing. It used prisms to join two different pictures together.

His scientific discoveries helped keep people safe in the real world. Brewster worked hard to improve the British lighthouse system. He described a way to use special lenses to make light brighter. He pushed leaders to use this new system starting around 1820. This helped ships see the light more clearly at sea. He was also a great writer and editor. He helped run the Edinburgh Encyclopædia for many years. He even wrote a very long biography about Isaac Newton.

Many people today still benefit from the things Brewster studied. When you look through a kaleidoscope, you are seeing his invention. When you watch a 3D movie, you are using ideas similar to his stereoscope. His work in optics helps us understand how light works everywhere. He was called the "father of modern experimental optics" by his peers. He spent his life making science easy for everyone to understand. His many books helped make science popular all over the world.
