space Maturity 5-7 Next article →

The Pleiades is a beautiful group of stars in the sky. It is also called an open star cluster. This means the stars live close together in space.

Many people know it as the Seven Sisters. It is located in the northwest part of the constellation Taurus. This cluster is very easy to see with just your eyes.

It is one of the nearest star clusters to Earth. The stars are about 444 light-years away from us. This makes it a very important part of our night sky.

Most of the stars in this cluster are young and blue. They formed within the last 100 million years. These stars are hot and very bright.

You might see glowing clouds around the brightest stars. These are called reflection nebulae. Scientists used to think these clouds were leftover bits from the stars. Now, they think the stars are just passing through a dust cloud. This dust cloud is moving at a different speed than the stars. The cluster likely started as a small group like the Orion Nebula.

People have looked at these stars for a very long time. Ancient cultures used the Pleiades to make calendars. Around 2330 BC, the cluster marked the vernal point. This helped people track the seasons.

The Nebra sky disc from 1600 BC shows these stars. In ancient India, they were called Kṛttikā. This name means "the Cuttings" because they mark the year. In Mesopotamia, they were listed in astronomy books. Many groups, like the Maya and the Cherokee, also watched them.

History shows us how our view of the stars has changed. Galileo Galilei was the first to see them through a telescope. In 1610, he showed that there are many more stars than we can see.

Later, John Michell calculated that these stars are physically related. He found it was unlikely they were just in a random line. In 1771, Charles Messier added them to his famous list. He named the cluster M45. This is why scientists still use that name today.

These stars show up in many parts of our lives. In Japan, the cluster is called Subaru. This word means "to cluster together."

The Subaru car company uses a six-star logo to honor this. There is even a large Subaru Telescope in Hawaii. The stars also appear in stories and books. J.R.R. Tolkien called them the "netted stars" in his famous stories. The cluster will stay together for about 250 million more years. After that, gravity will pull them apart into the galaxy.
