Rosette Nebula

space Maturity 11-13 Next article →

The Rosette Nebula is a huge cloud in space. It is also called Caldwell 49. This cloud sits in the Monoceros region of our Milky Way Galaxy. It is an H II region, which is a type of glowing gas cloud. The nebula has a very interesting shape. Some people think it looks like a rose. Others say it looks like a human skull.

This nebula works by using light to glow. Inside the cloud, many young stars are forming. These stars give off radiation. This radiation hits the atoms in the nebula. Then, the atoms give off their own light. This creates what we call an emission nebula. Two massive O-type stars are named HD 46223 and HD 46150. These stars help blow a large bubble in the cloud.

Many people have studied this place over the years. John Flamsteed found the star cluster NGC 2244 in 1690. This cluster lives inside the nebula. John Herschel also discovered a part of the nebula called NGC 2239. The nebula is very far away. It is about 5,000 light-years from Earth. It is also very wide. The nebula is roughly 130 light-years across.

There are many specific facts about this star-forming area. The nebula has a mass of about 10,000 solar masses. There are about 2,500 young stars in this complex. Scientists found a hot glow between the stars. This is a super-hot plasma. It can be 1 to 10 million K. This heat comes from winds from the massive stars. The nebula also has several other names like NGC 2237 and NGC 2238.

You can think of the nebula as a giant star nursery. It is a place where new stars are born from gas. This is similar to how a garden grows flowers from soil. Even on Earth, we have special things for our stars. In 2019, Oklahoma made this nebula their official state astronomical object. Governor Kevin Stitt signed this law in April 2019. It is a very special place in our galaxy.
