Proplyd

space Maturity 11-13 Next article →

A proplyd is a very special disk of dust and gas around a young star.

The name is short for ionized protoplanetary disk. This means light from nearby stars hits the disk and changes it. These disks are important because they might grow into new solar systems. They are often found in places where many new stars are being born. Most proplyds eventually turn into systems with no planets. Some might grow into just one very large system of planets.

These disks work in a few different ways depending on where they are. Some proplyds stay close to their host star. They glow brightly because of the star's own light. Other proplyds sit much further away from their star. These look like dark silhouettes because the cool dust blocks the light.

Light from big stars can also cause photoevaporation. This is a thing that happens when light blows the gas away. This process can create long tails of dust behind the disk.

Scientists have been studying these objects for a long time. In 1979, people using the Lallemand electronic camera saw six strange sources. They were near the Trapezium Cluster in the Orion Nebula. At first, they were called partly ionized globules. Later, the Very Large Array showed these were solar-system-sized objects. In 1993, the Hubble Space Telescope finally showed them clearly. This is when the name "proplyd" was first used.

We can find many proplyds in the Orion Nebula. It is about 1,500 light-years away from our Sun. There are nearly 180 proplyds discovered there.

Other places also have them, like the NGC 1977 region. That area has 7 confirmed proplyds. We also see dusty proplyds in the Westerhout 5 region. These are found around the star HD 17505.

Some even have tails that are 40,000 astronomical units long.

Proplyds help us understand how our own home began. Our Solar System has 8 planets and 5 dwarf planets. It also has 5 planetesimal systems.

To make planets, a star needs the right temperature and distance. The amount of metal in the star also matters. By looking at proplyds, we see how stars and planets grow. We are watching the same things that happened to our Sun long ago.
