space Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Look up at the night sky. You might see a bright group of stars. This is the Pleiades. People also call it the Seven Sisters. It is an open star cluster. This means the stars stay close together in space.

The stars are very young. They formed within the last 100 million years. Most of these stars are hot and blue. They are very easy to see with your eyes.

The cluster is about 444 light-years away. This is one of the closest clusters to Earth. Some stars look like they are in a cloud. These are reflection nebulae. A nebula is a cloud of dust and gas. The stars are likely passing through a dust cloud.

Many cultures have used these stars for a long time. Ancient people used them to make calendars. In Japan, the name Subaru means "to cluster together."
