NGC 4151 is a very special kind of galaxy. It is an intermediate spiral galaxy. This means it has a shape like a spinning disk. It also has a weak inner ring. You can find it in the constellation Canes Venatici. Some people call it the "Eye of Sauron." They gave it this nickname because of how it looks.

This galaxy has a huge black hole at its center. It is a supermassive black hole. This black hole is one of the closest to Earth. It has a mass of 2.5 million to 30 million suns. Some people think there might be two black holes there. They think one could be 40 million suns. The other might be 10 million suns. They might orbit each other every 15.8 years.

Scientists first saw this galaxy a long time ago. William Herschel mentioned it on March 17, 1787. It is a Seyfert galaxy. This is a name for a specific type of galaxy. It was one of six galaxies in a famous paper. That paper helped define the term Seyfert. The galaxy belongs to the NGC 4151 Group. This group has nine galaxies in it.

The black hole makes bright X-ray light. This happens in a few ways. One way is from material falling into the black hole. This happened much faster 25,000 years ago. The bright light can strip electrons from atoms. Another way involves an accretion disk. This is a disk of material around the hole. The disk creates a strong flow of gas. This flow heats the gas to very high temperatures.

We can see many things happening in this galaxy. On April 1, 2018, a supernova was found. This was called SN 2018aoq. It was found by the Lick Observatory Supernova Search. X-ray light was first detected in 1970. This was done by the Uhuru satellite. The XMM-Newton satellite also found X-ray signals. These signals show the disk reflecting light. It takes about half an hour for this to happen.
