Dipole repeller

space Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Space is full of movement. Our own group of galaxies is moving through the universe. This movement is part of a much larger flow. Scientists found a special area called the Dipole Repeller.

It is a huge empty zone in space. This area is known as a void. Voids have very little matter inside them. This discovery helps us understand why galaxies move the way they do. It is a key part of the cosmic V-Web.

How does a void seem to push things? It does not actually use a pushing force. Gravity is a force that pulls things together. It does not push objects away. Instead, the Dipole Repeller works because of what is nearby. There is a huge group of galaxies called the Shapley Supercluster. This area has a lot of matter. It creates a strong pull called the Shapley Attractor.

Matter near the void gets pulled toward that attractor. This makes it look like the void is pushing galaxies away.

Researchers first detected this area in 2017. They shared their findings in a journal called Nature Astronomy.

A team including Yehuda Hoffman and Hélène Courtois worked on this. They looked at how galaxies move across great distances. They found that no single group of matter could explain all the motion. They saw that an extra force seemed to be at work. This force appeared to be repulsive. This helped them identify the Dipole Repeller as a major factor.

There are many specific facts about this region. The Dipole Repeller is located about 250 million light-years away.

It sits directly across from the Shapley Attractor. Our Local Group of galaxies moves relative to the cosmic microwave background. This movement is part of a pattern that reaches very far. Scientists also found another void in September 2017. They called this the Cold Spot Repeller. Both of these voids help shape the large-scale flow of the universe.

Think about a ball on a flat floor. If you pull the ball toward a heavy magnet, it moves fast. If there is nothing on the other side, the ball moves away from that empty space. The ball is not being pushed by the empty space. It is simply being pulled by the magnet.

The Dipole Repeller works in a similar way. The empty void is just a place with less pull. The strong gravity from the Shapley Supercluster does the real pulling. This creates the amazing dance of galaxies we see today.
