CMB cold spot

space Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Scientists have found a very strange area in the sky. It is known as the CMB Cold Spot. This spot is a part of the cosmic microwave background radiation. This radiation is a steady warmth found throughout the universe.

Most of this warmth stays at a temperature of about 2.7 K. However, this specific spot is much colder than the average. It is about 70 μK colder than the rest of the sky. At some points, it can be as cold as 140 μK below average. This makes the spot stand out because it is so different.

This cold area is very large compared to other spots. Most temperature changes in the early universe are quite small. They usually cover a scale of only about 1°. The Cold Spot has a radius of about 5°. This large size makes it very unlikely according to most models. One idea is that a supervoid exists in that direction. A supervoid is a huge, empty region with very little matter. This void would change how light travels through it. This process is called the integrated Sachs–Wolfe effect.

Researchers first found this area using the WMAP satellite. The Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe recorded the data in its first year. It saw the cold region in the Eridanus constellation. Later, the Planck satellite also saw the spot in 2013. This helped prove the spot was not just a mistake by WMAP. Scientists used three years of data to study it further. They found the chance of this happening naturally was only 1.85%. This low number shows how special the spot truly is.

There are many different ideas about what caused this spot. Some researchers believe it is a supervoid. A 2015 study suggested a void 1.8 billion light-years wide exists there. This void might be 3 billion light-years away from our galaxy. In December 2021, the Dark Energy Survey found more evidence for this. Other scientists have different theories. They suggest it could be a cosmic texture from the early universe. Some even think it is a sign of another universe.

They think our universe might have bumped into another one.

Thinking about the Cold Spot helps us understand the whole universe. It is like finding a giant, cold patch in a warm blanket. Most of the sky follows a predictable pattern. This spot breaks those rules in a big way. It could be a giant hole or a leftover from the start of time. Every new piece of data helps us learn more. We are still looking for the real answer. The mystery of the Cold Spot remains one of our biggest questions in space.
