It is a barred spiral galaxy. This means it has a central bar shape and spiral arms. These arms are made of gas and dust. Our sun sits on the edge of one arm. We call this the Orion Arm.

Looking up, the galaxy looks like a hazy white band. This light comes from billions of stars. Most people cannot see the stars one by one. They just see a glowing strip. Some parts of the band look dark. This is because thick dust blocks the light.

At the very center is a supermassive black hole. It is called Sagittarius A*. It is very heavy. It has the mass of 4.1 million suns. The galaxy is also very old. Some stars formed near the start of the universe. People have studied the Milky Way for a long time. In 1610, Galileo used a telescope to see its stars. Before that, people thought it held all the stars in existence. Now we know it is just one of many galaxies.
