This galaxy is part of a larger group called the Local Group. It is also a piece of the massive Virgo Supercluster. Scientists think the galaxy might even be 2 million light-years wide when including dark matter.

Looking up at the night sky, the galaxy looks like a hazy white band. This band is about 30 degrees wide. The light comes from billions of stars that are too far away to see one by one.

Some parts of this band look like soft, bright clouds. The largest is the Large Sagittarius Star Cloud. Other parts look dark because of thick dust. These dark spots are called the Great Rift and the Coalsack. These dust clouds block the light from stars behind them. People in the southern hemisphere even see these dark areas as shapes in the sky.

At the very center of our galaxy lies a special object. It is a supermassive black hole called Sagittarius A*. This black hole is incredibly heavy. It has the mass of about 4.1 million suns. The stars near the center form a bright bulge. Some of these stars are nearly as old as the universe itself. They likely formed just after the Big Bang. This makes the Milky Way a very ancient place in space.

Humans have studied this light for a very long time. In 1610, Galileo Galilei used a telescope to look closer. He discovered that the hazy band was actually made of many individual stars.

Different cultures have given the Milky Way many beautiful names. In China and East Asia, it is often called the Silver River. The Greeks told stories about milk spilling to create the band. In Australia, the Kaurna people called it the "house river." Some northern peoples called it the "Birds' Path." They noticed that migratory birds follow the path of the galaxy. Even in England, it was once called the "Walsingham Way" by pilgrims. These names show how much people have wondered about the sky.

These are not empty spaces, but areas where thick interstellar dust blocks the light from distant stars. The area of the sky obscured by the galaxy's plane is called the Zone of Avoidance.

Humanity's understanding of the galaxy has evolved through centuries of observation. For much of history, people viewed the Milky Way through the lens of mythology. The Greeks believed the band was spilled milk from the goddess Hera. In contrast, the Chinese referred to it as the Silver River. In 1610, Galileo Galilei used a telescope to make a landmark discovery. He resolved the hazy band into individual, distinct stars. This proved the Milky Way was not a single cloud, but a collection of stars.

Modern science uses advanced tools to map this complex system. Data from the European Space Agency’s Gaia telescope provides detailed maps of stellar structures. These maps show the distribution of stars, gas, and dust throughout the spiral arms. Astronomers can now trace the history of star formation across the galactic disk. We know the galaxy contains between 100 and 400 billion stars. It also contains at least that many planets. Understanding the Milky Way helps us understand the laws of physics that govern the entire universe.
