Philosophy of science is a special way of thinking about how we learn about the world.

It is a branch of philosophy that looks at the foundations and methods of science. Many people wonder about the difference between real science and non-science. They also ask if scientific theories are truly reliable. Some thinkers want to know the ultimate purpose of science for humans. This study looks at how science works in practice. It also explores how science connects to ideas like truth.

One major task is solving the demarcation problem. This is the hard job of telling science apart from pseudoscience. Pseudoscience is when ideas pretend to be scientific to look important.

Karl Popper was a famous thinker who helped with this. He said a key part of science is falsifiability. This means a scientific claim must be able to be proven false. If an idea cannot be tested or proven wrong, it might not be science. Other thinkers, like Martin Gardner, have shared different views on this. Some people even say the problem is too hard to solve.

Science has a very long history of being studied.

People have thought about science since the time of Aristotle. However, philosophy of science became its own subject in the 20th century. This happened after a group called the logical positivists began their work. They wanted to find ways to make sure all statements were meaningful. Later, Karl Popper criticized these ideas to help set new standards. In 1962, Thomas Kuhn wrote a very important book. His book, The Structure of Scientific Revolutions, changed how we see progress.

Thomas Kuhn argued that science does not just grow in a straight line. Instead, he said science moves through things called paradigms. A paradigm is a set of questions and practices used in a certain time.

Other thinkers like W. V. Quine looked at how theories fit together. They believed a theory is good if it makes sense within a whole system. Some people, like Stephen Jay Gould, believe science relies on certain assumptions. These assumptions include the idea that nature is uniform. Even Paul Feyerabend argued that there is no single scientific method. He thought all approaches, even supernatural ones, should be allowed.

Philosophers also look at how science explains the things we see.

One way to explain things is to use a scientific law. This is called the deductive-nomological model. Other thinkers like Wesley Salmon focused on statistical relevance. Some people use a rule called Occam's razor to find answers. This rule suggests choosing the simplest explanation available. Scientists also study how human experience shapes what they see.

For example, looking through a telescope can be influenced by a theory. This shows that how we observe the world is linked to what we believe.
