Naturalism is a way of thinking about how our universe works.

This philosophy suggests that only natural laws and forces operate in the world. It teaches that everything can be explained by things we can measure. For example, thinkers look at mass and energy to understand nature. This view says that spirits, gods, or ghosts are not real. Some call this strong belief metaphysical naturalism. It claims that nature has no special purpose or outside guidance.

There are different ways to use this idea in life. One way is called methodological naturalism. This is a way of working rather than a belief about what is true. Scientists use this method to study the world through natural causes. They do not have to decide if gods exist to do their work. They simply assume natural laws are the best tools for their jobs. This helps them stay focused on what they can observe and test.

This way of thinking has a very long history. In ancient Greece, a group called the Milesians studied natural causes. These thinkers included Thales, Anaximander, and Anaximenes.

Their peers called them the "physikoi," which means natural philosophers. Later, the philosopher Aristotle also studied how nature functions. In the East, the Samkhya school of Hinduism also held similar ideas. They saw nature as the main cause of the universe.

New ideas about naturalism grew during the Age of Enlightenment. In the 17th and 18th centuries, thinkers like David Hume emerged. Some people also followed materialism, which is a type of naturalism. During the 19th century, German scientists like Vogt and Büchner held big debates. In the 20th century, Americans like John Dewey used the term. This era helped define how we use the word naturalism today. Many different people have helped shape these complex ideas over time.

Today, many academic philosophers still study these natural views. They look at how science and philosophy connect to each other. Some thinkers believe all physical effects have physical causes. This is often linked to the many discoveries made in science. While many people still hold different religious beliefs, naturalism remains important. It helps us ask big questions about the cosmos. We can wonder how everything fits together through science and thought.
