A resource is any material available in our environment that helps satisfy human needs and wants.

To be a true resource, an item must be technologically accessible, economically feasible, and culturally sustainable. This means we must have the tools to reach it and the money to use it. An object might only become a resource once new technology is invented. Using resources effectively can increase wealth and improve the functioning of entire systems. The concept of resources is studied in many fields, including economics, biology, ecology, and computer science.

Natural resources are materials derived directly from the environment. These can be classified by their origin into abiotic and biotic categories. Abiotic resources consist of non-living things like land, water, air, and minerals such as gold, iron, copper, and silver. Biotic resources come from the biosphere, including forests, animals, birds, and fish. Some minerals like coal and petroleum are considered biotic. This is because they formed from fossilized organic matter over very long geological periods.

Scientists also categorize natural resources by their stage of development. Potential resources are known to exist but are not yet used. For example, petroleum may exist in the sedimentary rocks of India or Kuwait. It remains a potential resource until it is actually drilled. Actual resources are those that have been surveyed and are currently being used. An example is the petroleum and natural gas obtained from the Mumbai High Fields. A reserve resource is the part of an actual resource that can be developed profitably with current technology. A stock resource is the part that cannot be developed profitably due to a lack of technology.

Another way to group resources is by their renewability. Non-renewable resources, such as minerals and fossils, form over extremely long periods. They cannot be replenished once they are depleted. Even though metals can be recycled, they are still classified as non-renewable. Renewable resources, like forests and fisheries, can be replenished relatively quickly. Some are called perpetual resources, such as sunlight, air, and wind. These are available continuously and are not affected by human consumption.

Some renewable resources are actually "conditionally renewable." This means they are currently subject to excess human consumption. To use these sustainably, humans must stay within a "zero ecological footprint." This means using less than the Earth's capacity to regenerate. If overconsumption occurs, it can lead to the total and everlasting destruction of the resource. This includes vital areas like agricultural lands, healthy water, and soil.

In economics, human resources and capital are also essential. Human resources refer to the work people provide through their skills, energy, talent, and knowledge. In project management, these are the employees responsible for specific activities. Capital refers to durable produced goods used as inputs for further production. A typical example is machinery used in a factory. Capital can be tangible, like physical equipment, or intangible, like a corporate brand or a patent.

Computer resources are another specialized category. A computer resource is any physical or virtual component with limited availability. These include means for input, processing, output, communication, and storage.

Managing these resources requires careful allocation to ensure systems function correctly.

Because the demand for resources increases as economies develop, we must practice sustainable development. This is a pattern of use that meets present needs without compromising future generations. We can help by following the three R's: reduce, reuse, and recycle. Without careful management, we face problems like environmental degradation and resource depletion. Wise usage can lead to economic growth, prosperity, and a higher quality of life.
