Forestry

Forestry is the science and craft of creating, managing, and repairing forests. It involves the careful use and conservation of woodlands for human and environmental benefits. Practitioners of this field are called foresters. They work in both natural stands and man-made plantations. Forestry is a broad field that uses many different sciences. It draws from biology, physics, social studies, politics, and management. By studying these areas, foresters can protect the vital role forests play in our biosphere.

Modern forestry often uses a strategy called multiple-use management. This approach allows a forest to serve many different purposes at once. It provides essential timber and fuel wood for people. It also creates wildlife habitats and manages natural water quality. Foresters use these lands for recreation and to protect communities and landscapes. They also manage biodiversity and control soil erosion. One critical role is preserving forests as sinks for atmospheric carbon dioxide. This helps regulate the gases in our atmosphere.

Within forestry, there are specialized branches of study. Silviculture is the practice of controlling forests specifically for timber production. People who specialize in this are called silviculturists. Another important field is dendrology. Dendrology is a subset of botany that studies woody plants. It focuses on the taxonomic classification of trees, shrubs, and lianas. There is also urban forestry, which focuses on managing trees in cities. This helps improve the environment where people live and work.

Genetic diversity is a cornerstone of healthy forest management. This refers to the differences in DNA sequences between individual trees. A tree's unique genetic composition is called its genotype. This genotype determines its phenotype, which is how the tree actually performs at a specific site. Using high-quality reproductive material with high genetic diversity is essential. This variety gives forests resilience against pests and diseases. It also allows trees to adapt and evolve as environmental conditions change. Without this diversity, forest ecosystems would be much more fragile.

Forests face many serious threats that foresters must address. In 2015, forest fires affected approximately 98 million hectares of land. Most of this damage occurred in tropical domains. About 4 percent of the total forest area burned that year. Two-thirds of these fires were located in Africa and South America. Additionally, insects, diseases, and severe weather damaged about 40 million hectares in 2015. This damage mostly happened in temperate and boreal regions. Climate change also creates new threats for marginal tree populations.

Forestry is a massive part of the global economy. It provides more than 86 million green jobs around the world. In Germany, forests cover nearly one-third of the total land area. Wood is the most important renewable resource in that country. Forestry supports over a million jobs in Germany alone. It adds about €181 billion of value to the German economy each year. However, life in forests can be difficult in some regions. About 880 million people collect fuelwood or produce charcoal. In some low-income areas, 252 million people earn less than US$1.25 per day.

Learning to be a forester requires extensive education. Students study biology, ecology, botany, genetics, and soil science. They also learn about climatology, hydrology, and economics. Understanding sociology and political science is often considered an advantage. Many programs also teach conflict resolution and communication skills. In the United States, the Society of American Foresters accredits many degrees. In Canada, graduates from certain programs receive silver rings. The International Union of Forest Research Organizations coordinates forest science efforts globally.
