Historians use this method to understand our current world. They want to know why our environment looks the way it does today. They also look for ways to face the problems of tomorrow.

This study is divided into three main parts. The first part looks at nature itself. It tracks how humans change the land, water, air, and living things. The second part looks at how humans use nature. This includes how growing populations and new tools change the world. It also looks at how we make and use goods.

Before this, many history books only focused on how technology helped humans master nature. Environmental historians wanted a more inclusive story. They wanted to show that humans are part of nature, not separate from it.

Many important writers helped build this field. In 1967, Roderick Nash published a famous book called Wilderness and the American Mind. He used the term "environmental history" in a speech in 1969. Another key book was written by Alfred W. Crosby in 1972. This book was called The Columbian Exchange.

Environmental history can be about many different things. It can look at a small local area or a whole continent. It can even cover billions of years of Earth's history.
