Plovers are a large group of wading birds found almost everywhere on Earth. These birds walk through shallow water to find food. You can find them in many different places across the globe. However, they do not live in the polar regions. They also stay away from the Sahara desert.

There are many different kinds of plovers in this group. Some belong to the subfamily Charadriinae, which includes most of them. Scientists still study how these birds are related to one another.

Most plovers have relatively short bills. They use these bills to hunt for food in a special way. Instead of feeling for food, they hunt by sight. They look for insects, worms, or other invertebrates.

To catch their prey, they use a run-and-pause technique. This means they run quickly and then stop to look. This is different from a bird like a snipe. Snipes use long bills to probe the ground steadily.

Plovers have a clever way to stay safe from danger. This method is called false brooding. It is a type of distraction display used to protect their eggs. A bird might pretend to sit on an imaginary nest site. It might also pretend to change its position to lead a threat away.

This trick helps keep the real nest hidden and safe from harm.

Scientists have identified many different species of these birds. The International Ornithological Congress recognizes 69 species of plovers, dotterels, and lapwings. These birds belong to 11 different genera. Some genera are very small and have only one species. For example, the Grey plover was named by Linnaeus in 1758. The American golden plover was named by Müller in 1776. There are many more names, like the Killdeer named by Linnaeus in 1758.

You can see how these birds connect to the seasons. In Iceland, the European golden plover is very important to people. It spends its summers in that country. When the first plover appears, it means spring has arrived. The Icelandic media always reports when the first one is seen. This makes the bird a famous sign of new life. Watching for a plover is like watching for the end of winter.
