We believe the family originated during the mid-Miocene epoch. Phylogenetic studies suggest their common ancestor lived about 18 million years ago. This ancestor was also the ancestor of the families Viduidae and Estrildidae. In 2017 and 2019, Thilina de Silva and collaborators conducted molecular phylogenetic studies. These studies used DNA to show that the genus Ploceus is polyphyletic. This means the members of that genus do not all share a single immediate common ancestor.
