It belongs to the estrildid family of birds. These birds live on islands like Java, Bali, and Bawean in Indonesia. They are very social and like to live in groups. Most of these birds eat grain and seeds. They often live in open grasslands or near farms. Because they eat rice, they were once seen as pests in rice fields.

Adult birds have a very distinct look. They have grey feathers on their backs and chests. Their bellies and feet are a bright pink color. They also have a thick red bill and a red ring around their eyes.

Young birds look different from adults. They have brown feathers and plain heads. Very young birds even have black beaks with pink at the base. These birds use sounds to talk to each other. They make fast, loud trills when they are being aggressive. They make slow, soft trills when they are being friendly.

People have studied these birds for a long time. The Swedish naturalist Carl Linnaeus first described them in 1758. He gave them the name *Loxia oryzivora*. This name comes from Latin words for "rice" and "eating." He used a description from George Edwards. Edwards was an English naturalist who wrote about them in 1743.

Scientists have changed the bird's group name several times. They used the name *Padda* for a long time. In 2009, they moved them to the *Lonchura* group. Then, in 2020, they moved them back to *Padda* after more studies.

Java sparrows are popular pets in many places. People in China kept them during the Ming Dynasty. In Japan, people have kept them since the 1700s. They even appear in old Japanese paintings.

In the United States, they were very popular in the 1960s and 1970s. Today, they live in places like Hawaii and Puerto Rico. People have bred them to have many colors. You can find white, silver, cream, and even a called sakura buncho. Some birds are also called pied Java sparrows.

Even though they are popular pets, wild birds face hard jobs. They are losing their natural homes. People also hunt and trap them. Because of this, there are fewer than 10,000 birds left in the wild.

The IUCN Red List says they are endangered. They are also part of a group called CITES. This group helps protect animals from being traded illegally. This is important because people want them for their beautiful songs.
