Eider

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Eiders are large sea ducks. They live in cold parts of the North. There are three kinds of eiders alive today.

One kind is the common eider. This bird has very soft feathers called down. People use this down to fill pillows and quilts. We call these warm quilts eiderdown.

In Iceland, farmers work with these birds. The farmers collect and clean the down. Then they sell it. The name for these ducks comes from Greek words. It means "body wool." This refers to their soft down.

Some animals try to hunt the ducks. The Arctic fox is one predator. An American mink is another. The mink is not from Iceland. It is an invasive species. This means it was brought there from somewhere else. The mink has cut down the amount of down we get. It cut the amount by more than half. In Great Britain, people have old stories about them. They call them Saint Cuthbert's ducks.
