Mergini is a group of sea ducks.

Most of these 22 species live in the far north. Many spend their winters near the ocean. Some like to live near rivers instead.

These ducks have special ways to live in salt water. They have salt glands. These are parts that help them handle salt. Young ducks do not have well-made glands yet.

Some sea ducks eat fish. We call them sawbills. This is because their bills have serrated edges. These edges are like the teeth on a saw. They help the duck grip its food.

Other ducks dive deep. They look for things like molluscs on the sea floor.

These birds also change their look. In late summer, they grow eclipse plumage. This is a set of feathers for that time. In the winter, they molt. To molt means to shed old feathers. They grow new breeding plumage in the winter.
