These ducks have a unique body shape. Their legs are set far back on their bodies. This helps them push through the water. It makes them great at diving. However, it makes walking on land hard. They are also strong fliers. They have broad wings with blunt tips. These wings need very fast beats to fly. This can make taking off a bit hard.

Many of these ducks live in the Northern Hemisphere. Some ducks fly to new places when seasons change. We call this migration. Other ducks stay in one place. Most diving ducks like fresh water. Some live in estuaries, which are where rivers meet the sea. The hardhead duck is an example. It may move based on rainfall. The female shown here is an A. australis. It is the only member of its group in Australia.
