Many skuas are hunters. They use kleptoparasitism to find food. This is a way of stealing food from other birds. They chase gulls and terns to take their catches. They can even attack birds three times heavier than them. Larger skuas like the great skua kill and eat adult birds.

Skuas live in cold regions. They nest on the ground in the Arctic and Antarctic. Some have even been seen at the South Pole. During nesting season, they eat eggs and chicks from other birds. They also eat fish and small animals like lemmings. In the south, they may eat meat from dead seals.
