They include petrels, shearwaters, and prions. These birds live in every ocean. Some live near the cold poles. Others live in warm tropical seas.

These birds come in many sizes. The giant petrel is very large. It has a wingspan almost as big as an albatross. The diving petrel is very small. It is like a tiny dove. Most have dull colors like grey or brown. They use special tubes on their noses to smell. This helps them find food in the vast sea.

Most procellariids are great at flying. They have long, narrow wings. They use the wind to glide over waves. This is called dynamic soaring. It helps them stay in the air with less work. Some birds, like shearwaters, use their wings to swim deep underwater.

On land, most of these birds have weak legs. They can only shuffle along the ground. Giant petrels are different. They have strong legs for walking. Many of these birds fly very far each year. They travel across the whole world to find food.
