Male birds have a special red pouch on their necks. This is called a gular pouch. During breeding season, they blow it up like a balloon. This helps them attract females.

These birds are great at flying. They have very long, pointed wings. They can soar on wind currents for weeks. They spend most of their day in the air. They hunt for fish and squid. Sometimes they catch prey near the water. Other times, they act as kleptoparasites. This means they steal food from other birds. They may even take chicks from nests.

Frigatebirds build nests in low trees or on cliffs. They lay only one egg at a time. They take a very long time to care for their young. Because of this, they only breed every other year. Some species are rare. The Christmas Island frigatebird lives on only one small island.
