It is known for a large flap of skin around its neck. This flap is called a frill. Most of the time, the frill stays folded against the body. It looks like a cape over the neck and shoulders.

When a predator tries to hunt them, the lizards use their frill. They spread it out to look much bigger. They may also hiss or open their mouths wide. This helps scare the enemy away.

These lizards spend most of their time in trees. This way of life is called being arboreal. They like to eat insects like ants and termites. They are sit-and-wait predators. This means they watch from a tree and then rush down to grab food.

Frilled lizards come in many colors. Their bodies can be grey, brown, or black. The frills can be red, orange, or yellow. The color often depends on where the lizard lives. Males are usually larger than females. They also have bigger heads and wider jaws.
