Ani (bird)

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Anis are large black birds. They belong to the cuckoo family. These birds live in the tropical New World. Some species reach the United States. They have long tails and deep black bills. Anis are very gregarious. This means they like to live in noisy groups.

Anis do not act like some other cuckoos. They do not lay eggs in other birds' nests. Instead, they nest communally. This means many pairs build one nest together. They build cup nests in trees. These nests are 2 to 6 meters high. Many females lay eggs in the same nest. They all share the work of feeding the young.

Anis spend a lot of time on the ground. They can run very well. Their flight is weak and wobbly. They eat termites and large insects. They also eat lizards and frogs. Some people thought they ate ticks from cows. This is not proven. Anis do follow grazing animals to find insects. They might eat a tick if it falls.
