The thorny devil is a special lizard from Australia.

It lives in dry deserts and scrublands. These lizards can live for 15 to 20 years. Females are usually larger than males.

This lizard has many sharp spikes on its body. These spikes help it stay safe from predators. It also has a false head on its neck. When a predator comes near, the lizard hides its real head. It shows the false head instead. This can trick the other animal.

Finding water in the desert is hard. The thorny devil has a clever way to drink. Its skin has tiny channels between the scales. It uses capillary action to move water. Capillary action is a way that liquid moves through small spaces.

The lizard can touch damp sand to get water. The water travels through its skin to its mouth. It can also collect dew in the morning. The dew moves through the skin channels to help it drink.
