The thorny devil is a very special lizard from Australia.

It lives in dry places like deserts and scrublands. These lizards are part of the Agamidae family. They can live for 15 to 20 years in the wild. Most of them have colors like brown or tan. This helps them hide in the desert sand. Their colors even change with the weather. They turn pale when it is warm. They turn darker when it is cold.

Finding water in a dry desert is a hard job. The thorny devil has a clever way to drink. Its skin is covered in tiny, ridged scales. These scales create small channels that work through capillary action. Capillary action is a way that liquid moves through tiny spaces.

The lizard can touch damp sand with its limbs. The water then moves through the skin to its mouth. It can also collect morning dew on its body. The water travels through the skin channels to help it drink.

Scientists first described this lizard in 1841. A biologist named John Edward Gray gave it its name. The name Moloch comes from an ancient deity. This name was used because the lizard looks like a beast. The lizard has many nicknames from people. Some call it a thorny dragon or a thorny toad. It also looks like the horned lizards in North America. Scientists think this happened because of convergent evolution. This means different animals grew to look similar.

The thorny devil has many unique features. Females are generally larger than the males. They live in areas with sandy loam soils. This lizard eats a lot of ants every day. It can eat thousands of ants in just one day. Some of the ants it eats belong to the genus Camponotus. To stay safe, the lizard has sharp spines. These spines make it very hard for a predator to swallow. It also has a false head on its neck.

The lizard uses clever tricks to stay safe. It has a spiny false head made of soft tissue. When a predator comes near, the lizard hides its real head. It dips its head between its front legs. Then, it shows the false head to the predator instead. This can trick birds or goannas that try to eat it. The lizard also moves in a strange way. It rocks back and forth while it searches for food. This unusual gait helps it move through the desert sand.
