Perenties are skilled hunters. They eat many things like birds and small mammals. They also eat other lizards. Sometimes, they even eat smaller perenties. Young lizards eat insects like grasshoppers. Adults can use strong claws to hunt kangaroos. They often swallow their food in one big gulp.

These lizards are very good at moving. They use long claws to climb trees. They can also dig a home in just minutes. To see the land, they stand on two legs. This is called tripoding. This helps them see what is nearby.

Perenties are shy and avoid people. If they feel in danger, they might freeze. They might also run away fast. If they are cornered, they will defend themselves. They can hiss or use their strong tail to strike. Scientists found that their mouths have oral secretions. These can cause swelling and pain if a lizard bites.
