Skua

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Skuas are a group of tough seabirds. They are known for being very strong and acrobatic fliers. These birds are often grey or brown in color. Some skuas have white markings on their wings. They have long bills with a hooked tip at the end. They also have webbed feet with sharp claws for gripping.

Many people call the smaller species jaegers in North America. The name jaeger is actually a German word that means hunter. The name skua comes from a place called Skúvoy. This is an island in the Faroe Islands.

These birds have a very interesting way of finding food. Many skuas use kleptoparasitism to eat. This is a fancy word for stealing food from other animals. They chase gulls and terns to take their catches. A skua can even attack a bird three times its size. Larger skuas like the great skua will kill adult birds to eat them.

Some skuas even try to take milk from elephant seals. They are very bold hunters in the wild.

Skuas live in many cold parts of the world. They build their nests on the ground. You can find them in the Arctic and Antarctic regions. Some skuas have even been seen at the South Pole.

During the nesting season, they look for specific foods. In the north, they might eat small animals called lemmings. In the southern oceans, they often eat fish. They also eat the eggs and chicks of other seabirds like penguins.

Scientists have studied these birds for a long time. A French zoologist named Mathurin Jacques Brisson named the genus in 1760. He used the parasitic jaeger as the main example. There are seven different species in this group. The long-tailed skua is about 45 centimeters long. The brown skua is a bit larger at 50 centimeters. On average, a skua has a wingspan of about 100 centimeters.

Skuas are related to other birds you might know. They are close relatives of gulls and auks. They are also related to waders and skimmers. Even though they look like large dark gulls, they are unique. They have a fleshy part called a cere above their beak. Parent skuas are very protective of their homes. They use divebombing to attack anything that gets too close to their nests. They aim for the heads of intruders to keep their babies safe.
