Moray eels are a large family of fish. Most live in warm saltwater near reefs.

Some species can live in fresh water too.

These eels have long, thin bodies. They often lack side fins. This makes them look very long. They have small eyes. Instead, they use a strong sense of smell to find food.

Morays have a very special way to eat. They have a second set of jaws deep inside their throat. These are called pharyngeal jaws. When a moray bites prey, these inner jaws shoot forward. They grab the food and pull it down the throat.

This is the only way any known animal hunts.

Their teeth help them eat different things. Some have sharp teeth to tear meat. Others have flat, molar-like teeth to crush shells.

They also have thick, slimy skin. This slime protects them. For eels that live in sand, the slime helps build strong burrows. Some morays even hunt with other fish. They work with groupers to find food in small spaces.
