The weever is a brown fish.

It can grow up to 37 cm long. Most weevers live in the eastern Atlantic ocean. They live in the Mediterranean sea too.

These fish like to hide in the sand. They bury themselves during the day. They only show their eyes. This helps them catch food. They eat shrimp and small fish.

Most fish have a swim bladder. This is a part that helps them float. Weevers do not have one. Because of this, they sink when they stop swimming.

Weevers have sharp spines on their fins and gills. These spines have venom. Venom is a substance that can cause pain. The lesser weever often stings people. This happens when people step on them in shallow water.

A sting can hurt more than a bee sting. It may cause swelling or itching. If you are stung, use hot water. Put the hurt area in hot water for 15 minutes. This helps the pain go away. Most people feel better in a few hours.
