Gurnards are fish that live on the sea floor.

They live in warm and cool seas all over the world. Some people call them sea robins. This name comes from their fins. Their fins look like the wings of a bird.

Gurnards have very special fins. They have three rays on each side. These are called fin-rays. These rays act like legs to help them walk. They also use them to find food. They can "taste" things on the sea floor with these fins.

These fish also make noise. They have a drumming muscle. This muscle beats against a swim bladder. A swim bladder is a part that helps fish float. This makes a croaking sound like a frog.

Gurnards have very hard, bony heads. Some have plates on their bodies for armor. They like to eat things like crabs. They also eat other small sea creatures. The tub gurnard is the largest kind. Most females are bigger than the males.
