Gurnards are a family of fish that live on the ocean floor.

They live in both warm and cool seas all around the world. Some people call them sea robins. This name comes from their large fins that look like bird wings.

They also get the name gurnard because they make a croaking sound. This noise sounds a lot like a frog. These fish are important parts of the sea's many different ecosystems.

These fish have a very special way of moving. On each side of their body, they have three walking rays. These rays come from their pectoral fins.

During their growth, these rays separate from the rest of the fin. They have special muscles that let them use these rays to walk on the seafloor. The rays also help them find food. They use a sense called chemoreception to "taste" things on the bottom. This helps them find small animals living in the sand.

Scientists have studied these fish for a long time. A naturalist named Constantine Samuel Rafinesque first described the family in 1815. Later, in 1883, researchers Jordan and Gilbert named a specific fish as the type for the family. This fish is called Trigla lyra. It was first described by Linnaeus in 1758. The name Trigla comes from an old name for red mullet. Linnaeus realized gurnards were actually different from those fish. This history helps us understand how we group living things today.

There are about 170 different species of gurnards in the world. They are divided into 14 different groups called genera.

The largest kind is the tub gurnard. It can grow quite long in the ocean. The smallest kind is the spotwing gurnard. Most gurnards are carnivores, which means they eat meat. They mainly eat crustaceans like crabs. They might also eat other small fish or mollusks. Adult gurnards like deeper water, but young ones stay in shallow areas.

Humans have interacted with gurnards for many years. In the past, fishermen in Britain often threw them back. Now, they are more popular to eat. They have firm white flesh that is good for soups. One famous French dish called bouillabaisse uses them.

In the United States, you can even find them in fish markets. People also use them as bait when they go fishing for other things. They are a busy and interesting part of our oceans.
