life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

The angel shark is a special kind of shark. It has a very flat body. This shape makes it look like a ray. Most of these sharks live in warm or mild seas. They like to stay near the bottom of the ocean.

These sharks are ambush predators. An ambush predator is an animal that hides to catch food. The shark buries itself in sand or mud. It can stay still for weeks! It waits for fish or crabs to swim by. Then, it snaps its jaws up very fast. It uses suction to pull prey into its mouth.

Angel sharks can grow to be quite big. Most reach 5 feet in length. The Japanese angel shark can reach 2 meters. They have long, needle-like teeth. They also have a unique way of breathing. They use gill flaps under their bodies to pump water. This helps them stay hidden while they breathe.

Many angel sharks are in danger today. They are called critically endangered. This means they might disappear forever. Fishing can catch them by mistake. We must work to keep them safe.
