life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Garden eels are a type of small fish. They belong to a group called Heterocongrinae. These eels live in warm ocean water around the world. Most of the 36 known species live in the Indo-Pacific.

These eels live in burrows on the sea floor. They stay mostly hidden in the sand. They poke their heads out to eat plankton. Plankton are tiny bits of food in the water. When many eels live together, they look like grass. This makes them look like a garden.

Eels live in large groups called colonies. One colony can cover one acre of the sea floor. A single colony can have thousands of eels in it.

Garden eels come in many colors. They also come in different sizes. Most species stay quite small. However, the largest species can grow to about 50 centimeters. They are part of the conger eel family. This family is called Congridae.
