Motmots are a special family of colorful birds. They belong to a group called Coraciiformes. This group also includes kingfishers and bee-eaters. Most motmots live in the warm forests of the Neotropics. You can find the largest ones in Central America. These birds have bright feathers and heavy bills.

Many motmots have very long tails. Some species have a tail that looks like a racket. This shape happens in a very interesting way. The barbs near the ends of two long feathers are weak. These barbs fall off when the bird cleans itself. This cleaning is called preening. The barbs also fall off from rubbing against things.

People used to have the wrong idea about these tails. Charles William Beebe once reported that birds plucked their feathers. He thought they pulled out parts of the feather web. We now know this is not true. The feathers just lose their parts naturally. This discovery helps us understand how the racket shape forms.

Motmots live in many different places. The highest number of them live in Honduras and Guatemala. There are seven different subspecies in total. The motmot is also the national bird of Nicaragua and El Salvador. In Nicaragua and Costa Rica, they even eat poison dart frogs. They also eat insects, fruit, and small lizards.

These birds have a unique way of staying safe. They often wag their tails back and forth. This is called a wag-display. They do this when they see a predator. The display tells the predator that the bird is watching. This helps the bird save its energy. It also stops the predator from wasting time on a chase.
