Todies are tiny birds from the Caribbean. They are very small. They weigh only 5 to 7 grams. This is about the weight of a few coins.

Todies have bright colors. Most have green heads and wings. They also have red throats. They have long, flat beaks. These beaks have jagged edges.

These birds live in forest areas. They like to sit on low branches. They watch for food. Todies eat many kinds of insects. They eat grasshoppers, beetles, and ants. They also eat small lizards and spiders. They mostly hunt in the morning.

Todies make homes in a special way. They dig tunnels in tree trunks or dirt banks. They use their beaks and feet to dig. Inside the tunnel is a nest. The parents lay about four white eggs.

Both parents help the babies. They feed the young chicks many times each day. They may feed a chick 140 times a day! This is the highest rate known for any bird.
