Turnstone

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Turnstones are small birds that live by the sea. There are two kinds of turnstones. One is the ruddy turnstone. The other is the black turnstone. They belong to the genus Arenaria. This name comes from a Latin word for sand.

These birds are waders. Waders are birds that walk in shallow water. Turnstones are stocky birds. They are about 20 to 25 cm long. Their wings span 50 to 60 cm. They weigh between 110 and 130 grams.

Turnstones have a special way of eating. They have strong necks. They also have short, wedge shaped bills. These bills point slightly up. They use these bills to flip stones and seaweed. This helps them find tiny prey. They like stony beaches more than sand. They often share the beach with purple sandpipers. Turnstones breed in the high Arctic. Then they fly to other places. They are migratory birds. This means they move from place to place.
