It has a long neck and a pot-bellied body. These birds live in wet meadows and marshes across northern Eurasia. They are highly gregarious, which means they love to be around others. This leads them to form huge flocks during the winter. One massive flock in Senegal even had one million birds!

They are migratory and travel long distances to find food.

Male and female ruffs look very different from each other. This is called sexual dimorphism.

The male is much larger than the female, who is called a reeve. During the breeding season, males grow bright head tufts and orange facial skin. They also grow a large collar of ornamental feathers. This collar is why they are named after a ruff, a type of neck-wear from the 1500s. Some males even have a rare form that mimics the female. These colorful feathers are used in a special display to find mates.

Learning about the ruff involves looking back at history.

The scientist Carl Linnaeus first described the bird in 1758. He originally named it Tringa pugnax. Later, a German naturalist named Blasius Merrem moved it to a different group in 1804. The name "pugnax" comes from a Latin word meaning combative. This is because the males can be very aggressive at their mating arenas. Today, DNA research helps us know exactly where they fit in the bird family.

There are many interesting facts about how ruffs live and grow.

A female lays four eggs in a nest on the ground. She stays with the eggs and raises the chicks all by herself. The chicks can move around shortly after they hatch. Ruffs eat many things, like insects, rice, and maize. In Russia, more than one million pairs of ruffs breed. However, their numbers are shrinking in Europe due to land drainage and hunting.

Their long legs and bills help them probe through soft mud for food. This is how many wading birds survive in wet places. Their migration patterns show how birds use different parts of the Earth. Some fly as far as 10,000 kilometers to reach warmer lands. Just like people travel for the seasons, ruffs move to find the best weather and food. They are a wonderful example of how animals adapt to change.
