Puffin

life science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Puffins are small, stocky seabirds that live near the ocean. They belong to a group called alcids. There are three different species of puffin in the world. Two species live in the North Pacific Ocean. These are the tufted puffin and the horned puffin. The third species is the Atlantic puffin. It lives in the North Atlantic Ocean.

People often call them "sea parrots" or "clowns of the sea" because they look so bright. They are pelagic birds, which means they spend much of their time on the open ocean. They feed by diving deep into the water.

Puffins have a very special way of working in the water. Their wings are short, but they use them to fly underwater. In the air, they must flap their wings very fast. They can flap up to 400 times every minute to stay aloft. Their beaks are also very useful for finding food. A puffin can hold many small fish in its beak at once. This happens because of a unique hinging mechanism. This allows the edges of the beak to meet at different angles. This helps them carry more food back to their chicks.

Scientists have studied puffins for a long time. A French zoologist named Mathurin Jacques Brisson named their group in 1760. He used the name Fratercula. This is Latin for "little brother." He chose this because their black and white feathers look like monk robes.

We also know about puffins from very old fossils. Some fossils of related birds go back to the Late Miocene. Other research suggests puffins may have started in the Pacific Ocean a long time ago. Some fossils of a species called Dow's puffin were found on the Channel Islands of California.

Many puffins live together in huge groups called colonies. They build nests on coastal cliffs or on islands. Some puffins dig burrows in soft soil to stay safe. The Atlantic puffin often lays just one creamy white egg. Both parents help to look after the egg and the chick. The chicks are called pufflings.

Iceland is a very important place for these birds. About 10 million Atlantic puffins live there. The largest colony is in the Westmann Isles of Iceland. In 2009, scientists counted 1.1 million nests in that one area. That means there could be up to 4 million puffins there!

Puffins are more clever than many people realize. In 2020, researchers saw Atlantic puffins using sticks as tools. They used the sticks to scratch themselves. This shows they have a basic ability to use objects. You might also see puffins in your own life if you live near the coast. For example, the Atlantic puffin is the provincial bird of Newfoundland and Labrador in Canada. Even computer software has used their name. A version of the Ubuntu Linux system was named "Plucky Puffin."
